The last couple of weeks I’ve had to post my Sunday post later in the day, because my weekend schedule is so screwy. I work 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday, go home and sleep, and then work 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on Sunday. To make matters worse, I came in right on the wire for having four reserve posts by the end of January. I did have four reserves by the end of January 31, and I did have my Tuesday and Thursday posts scheduled, as well as the Saturday jointly written post for the serialized script, “Flash Ahhhh!” I did not, however, while going into this crazy week have my Sunday post scheduled. Since I have my reserves, and time today on Sunday, my goal is to have my entire week of posts scheduled for the upcoming week.
For my Sunday post, I thought I might actually write about my Sunday. Super Big Game Sunday. There is a big game today. I’m commenting on the game, but I still won’t use the name, since everyone else seems to have to pay to use it.
I’m not sure I even understand how it is that they have copyright of it that applies to people referring to the event itself. Let’s say a band releases an album, we’ll say Duran Duran since they are releasing the CD version of “All You Need Is Now” this month, and since I saw them this week at an event that paid for the right to use the name of the big game. Would that band run around handing out cease and desist orders to any club or CD shop that held a CD release party, saying that they had to use “Band Name” rather than the actual name of the party?
This week! Join us for Band Name CD Release Party! The New Album, “Album Title” by the renowned band, Band Name! Be there, and be the first to buy “Album Title.”
“The Big Game” is false anyway, because there a lot of big games. We say the President of the United States, because there is only one person holding the office at a time. We say a US Senator, because there are many people elected to senatorial positions. That’s why they call it the “Supper Dish” or whatever it is they call it, because if they just said big game, we’d be like, what does that mean? But that’s what they make advertisers do, unless they pay for the right to use the official name.
There are some odd things that have gone on like this, and I don’t even know what to say about it sometimes.
The Temptations are still touring, but I don’t think there are any original members, but somebody owns the rights to the name and the use of the songs.
When Roger Waters left Pink Floyd, he tried blocking the remaining members from releasing albums using the Pink Floyd name, and from touring under the name.
Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe, were legally smacked down for using something like, “An Evening of Yes Song and Songs by Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe.” They were former members of Yes, and had the right to perform the songs, but the use of the band name “Yes” caused them trouble, even though they were performing those songs, making it accurate.
If you see Gene Loves Jezebel in some countries it is a different band than if you see them in another country, because the two founding members split the use of the name.
Is it just me, or is it weird to see a band that is just random singers using the name and the songs, or leaving a band and then telling them they can’t keep the name even though you left, or playing songs that are associated with a band but not being allowed to advertise that you are playing those songs, or catching the same band in two different countries and not actually seeing the same band, or not being able to call a sporting event by its name if you are hosting an event to watch it on TV? Is it just me, or was that a run on sentence?
But none of this really concerns me. I slept until 5:00 am, and came to work at 6:00 am. For various reasons, I’m stuck at work until 8:00 pm, and am not 100% sure I’ll actually get to leave then. The likelihood of me catching any of the big game isn’t very high. If I get out of here on time, I might meet my dad somewhere and watch the last so many minutes of the game. If I do, I’ll finish this out with what happened. If not then I guess I’m done with this unless I think of something else.
