For years now, it has been debated over and over whether or not humour is ok. Is it right to make fun of this person or this group or what the fuck ever? For me, the answer has always been, “It’s not only right, but in some ways it’s imperative.”
Criticism of those in power is one of the most important aspects of a free society. The society can decide whether the criticism is valid. The society can decide whether the joke is funny. That’s fine. But the moment we suggest that criticism and humour shouldn’t be used against our own people and our own beliefs, we’ve lost the plot.
If your people and your beliefs are as true and unimpeachable as you believe, then criticism will never varnish that truth. No amount of ridicule will ruin the value of the idea. If you’re afraid of criticism or ridicule, you’re not as sure of your beliefs as you think.
